The genesis of their prefab detached garage originated in 2006 when Montie and Jayna bought their home. They say they knew then that they wanted a building like the one they now have, but it wasn’t until 2009 when they set to task looking for one.
The plans began with a neighbor whom the Powell’s hired to make the couple’s landscaping vision a reality by infusing a natural ‘wild’ motif into the settings of both the front and backyards.
Along with the help of friends, the Powell’s hired a carpenter and master bricklayer to tackle building portions of their barn—but they both have spent many hours working on it as well, just the two of them.
“It was a lot of work for the two of us, but doing this together was super duper awesome,” says Jayna. “We looked forward to the late evenings of arch building. It was an awesome time. Our SteelMaster is definitely a work of art.”
The downstairs of the garage is used storage for their AirStream camper, truck, and motorcycles, and a small bathroom.
The outside of the Powell’s SteelMaster building is largely complete with tongue and groove timbers, Clinker bricks, and a broad array of items that they had collected, including various rocks brought to them by friends.
“Originally we wanted a wood-frame structure,” says Montie. “The cost was way more than we expected. Then we found SteelMaster were convinced that they were the best choice. Initially, it was the price, but we became more pleased as we were made aware of the benefits of using steel, such as the strength and ease of installation and assembly.”
The upstairs loft area contains an office area, guest bedroom, and storage space. Additionally, the building serves as a photo/video/music studio for the couple’s side business, PunkinMusher Productions, LLC.
Montie and Jayna rose to the challenge when their landscaper submitted their backyard for the 2011 Back Yards in Bloom Tour.
“It went great. Lots of ‘Oohs and Ahs’ over the yard, but, mostly ‘Wows’ when they saw the barn. Turns out, the Back Yards Tour was not but just a fun way to meet other people from our community who shared a love of interesting back yards. Though the people at the newspaper did not pick a winner, they chose only one picture to post, and it was our yard. We are very happy we choose SteelMaster [for our building].”
There are many things you have to take into consideration when planning your garage and/or living space.

It’s also important to think about the other aspects of your build. For example, what is the cost of the building’s foundation? How much will it cost to finish the interior of your building? Are you insulating your detached garage? Do you plan on framing the interior with wood? The list goes on!

It depends on your needs. For example, building a detached garage with a loft is different than building the average garage. This is because home and living spaces are considered a category two design, which has higher snow and wind requirements.
You also have to factor in collateral loads when designing homes. Simply put, collateral loads are the weight of what is going to hang from the arches such as drywall, sheetrock, etc.
