Utah Metal Buildings: FAQs

What are common uses of steel building kits in Utah?

From crops to livestock, Utah has an extremely diverse agricultural industry. In fact, the state has over 18,000 farms that cover 11 million acres of land. Not to mention the countless small farms and homesteads across the state.

Luckily for Utahns, SteelMaster has multi-use metal barns that will meet their variety of needs. We offer a wide range of customizable agricultural storage buildings that come in different models and sizes.

Our agricultural building kits have been used to store large tractors and other equipment, hay storage, animal shelters, grain storage, and much more.

Not only do we offer prefab barn kits, but our talented team of professional building specialists can also customize a structure to fit your needs and budget.

  • Metal Garage Kits, Workshops & Sheds

With years of experience, our team has worked with Utah residents to create countless dream garages, workshops, and sheds.

You don’t have to be a construction expert to put together a SteelMaster metal building kit. Our easy-to-follow instructions make it possible for anyone to build their own Quonset hut garage in just a few days. Our buildings are pre-cut and pre-drilled and they only require the use of one size nut and bolt.

  • Homes & Barndominiums

Using Quonset huts as homes has become a booming trend in the housing industry. Instead of spending months searching through listings to find the perfect home, families all over the world are choosing to build their own Quonset hut houses.

Arch houses are becoming a popular alternative because of the many cost and time-saving benefits they offer, plus the unique aesthetic they provide.

These homes are also known as ‘barndominiums’. A barndominium is a combination of a barn and condominium that can act as a place to live and a workshop or a large storage area. The barndominium trend became popular after an episode of HGTV’s Fixer Upper showed hosts Chip and Joanna Gaines transforming a horse barn into a functional and practical home for a Waco, Texas family.

Can Quonset huts meet Utah snow load requirements?

Utah is notorious for its snowfall. So much so that the phrase “The Greatest Snow on Earth” is on some of their license plates! From December through March, more than a foot of snow falls every five days in the Beehive state.

Every SteelMaster Quonset hut is engineered to handle extreme weather events in Utah, including blizzards and the heavy snow they leave behind.
In addition to checking your county’s snow load requirements, our building experts use an extremely detailed map to calculate the snow load of your property, right down to your installation site’s exact coordinates.

Once your building’s snow load requirements have been determined, your building specialist can design a structure that will accommodate heavy snow.
Any of our models can accommodate these loads but the X-Model is the most popular for heavy snow. This is because the X Model has a 4:12 pitched roof which makes it easier for heavy snow to slide right off.

Can a Quonset hut survive a tornado?

Utah sees about two or three tornadoes per year, with one of the most recent confirmed EF1 touching down in September 2021.

High winds and flying debris have the potential to destroy property, but our high-wind rated Quonset huts have survived some of the most dangerous twisters. A normal straight-wall building is vulnerable because its parts can be ripped off, even in a fairly weak tornado. The slightest opening can cause wind to get inside the structure and demolish it.

To prevent this, SteelMaster’s overlapping arch panels are bolted together to form a strong support system that will prevent a structural collapse. Not to mention, the high-quality, commercial-grade steel can protect your building from projectiles and debris brought on by a twister.
