New York Metal Buildings: FAQ
Why are steel storage buildings so popular in New York?
By far the most common steel building we sell in New York is for the storage of vehicles, tools and equipment with garages and sheds. But why do New Yorkers choose steel for storage? Our prefabricated metal garages and sheds are cost-effective, offer more space, are easy to maintain and are simple to assemble. We offer several metal building kits that can be easily customized to your specifications. SteelMaster’s prefab kits can be used store RVs, airplanes, snowmobiles, expensive cars and much more.
Metal Quonset Huts are renowned for their strength and limitless versatility. They are resistant to rodents and insect infestations, and they have survived many severe weather events you’d see in New York, including heavy snow storms, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes. Unlike wood garages and sheds, our steel storage buildings will not rot or warp.
Will Quonset huts work as barns for livestock and storage?
Quonset huts are preferred for many agricultural applications, including livestock. Because livestock and livestock products make up about 2/3 of New York’s agricultural income, one of the most common agricultural buildings we sell are for livestock. Quonset buildings have the ability to be open on both ends, one end or closed if access needs to be limited. The building’s strong steel walls will resist breakage when kicked by animals. Plus, the arches are easy to clean—simply dampen a cloth and use a bit of soap to wipe down the steel arches.
Beyond buildings for livestock, SteelMaster offers a wide range of customizable agricultural storage buildings that come in different models and sizes. Our prefabricated agricultural building kits have been used to store large equipment, hay, and grain storage and much more. Quonset Huts have a clear span design, which means that there’s 100 percent usable space to store large items and plenty of products.
Why are Quonsets used for warehouse and manufacturing facilities?
For buildings 80′ wide and less, Quonset huts are used for large warehousing and manufacturing operations because they offer the cost-consciousness of a kit building that requires minimal construction expertise and provide the long-term durability of corrugated steel. Add to that, they are customizable and built to order and the advantages of using a Quonset over other buildings are clear.
Whether you’re a warehouse at a transportation hub or a chemical manufacturer upstate, we make sure that before any of our warehouse buildings leave our factory they meet the local building codes in your area. Our licensed engineer will provide you with custom building blueprints that will be invaluable to you working with the local municipality and state regulations while giving you plenty of room for large trucks machinery, products and tools.
How are Quonset huts used for mining in New York?
Any road that is tractor-trailer-accessible can have a Quonset building delivered to it – which is perfect for more remote sand, gravel, limestone, and wollastonite mining operations throughout upstate New York.
Additionally, the clear span design of our metal buildings provides maximum space to store mining equipment like excavators and drilling machines. Our prefabricated buildings can be quickly installed so work processes are not interrupted. A small crew of miners could assemble the buildings, lowering labor costs. Once the work is done, the buildings can be easily disassembled, taken to the next mining site and put back together.
What custom Quonsets are in New York?
We have worked with many businesses and organizations throughout New York over the years, many of those jobs being custom designed. The Historic Richmond Town at Staten Island uses three SteelMaster Quonset Huts to provide viewing and storage facilities for the Staten Island Historical Society’s 62 carriages. The project was designed by Rice+Lipka Architects. The three buildings maximized storage capacity and provided over three times more square feet needed to house the entire collection of carriages. This is because the arch design is self-supporting and does not require the use of beams or trusses, allowing 100 percent use of the space available inside.
The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City added a modern edge to classic architecture by using a SteelMaster prefab roofing kit. Our metal roofing kits are cost effective, easy to assemble and require little maintenance. New York’s snow is no match for SteelMaster’s prefabricated roofing systems. Our curved metal roofs will withstand snowstorms, fires and hurricane-force winds. Plus, they’re custom-engineered to meet the wind and snow loads of any location and are made of nothing less than 22 gauge, commercial grade steel.
