Texas Hotel Uses Quonset Hut as Event Space

In addition to a restaurant, café and other amenities, The Carpenter Hotel in Austin, Texas has a hidden gem near their outdoor pool: an event space known as the “Q-Hut.”

The hotel’s website describes the Q-Hut as “part pool cabana, part outdoor courtyard pavilion. A nice place to throw a party.”

Erin Corrigan, a marketing representative for The Carpenter Hotel, says the hotel gets a lot of use out of the 30’ wide, 32‘ long and 15’ high SteelMaster Quonset hut.

“It’s a shady spot for you to enjoy coffee or work on a laptop while still enjoying birdsong and that fresh air.”

The Q-hut’s clear span design allows 100 percent usable space, allowing the hotel to use the structure in many ways.

“We use the Quonset hut for a variety of events, from yoga to art classes, to pool pavilion, to private dining, and workspace,” Corrigan said.

The space even has a projector, screens, and speakers for guests to host meetings.

“A meeting space doesn’t have to feel like an office!” Corrigan said.

Designers chose the classic Q-Model shape to honor Carpenters Union Hall and its postwar building, along with the neighborhood the hotel is located in.

“A city owned Quonset hut sits on Jessie Street just behind the hotel,” said Corrigan. “It feels as though it has always been a part of the property and makes it easy to be outdoors, a core value to The Carpenter Hotel.”

In fact, the outdoor space proved to be very valuable to the hotel during the COVID 19 pandemic, when many places were closed for indoor dining and events.

“Covered outdoor space with ample fresh air has been instrumental in our continued service during the pandemic,” Corrigan said. “During the colder months and when our dining room was closed for service the Quonset hut often served as our primary dining area.”

Overall, guests and staff at The Carpenter Hotel are thrilled with the outcome of their project.

“We love the Quonset hut!” Corrigan said.
