Surrounded by a Whole Lot of ‘Muscle’, Metal Garages Flex Their Staying Power
In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, muscle cars were all the rage for people looking for affordable, high-performance vehicles to drive around town or perhaps dabble in a little drag racing a la John Travolta in “Grease.”
All year long, car enthusiasts race to Moyock Muscle—a six acre stretch of land in Moyock, NC that is inundated with about 400 cars in various stages of disrepair, many of which are of the ‘muscle’ variety.
While some may view the expansive landscape and see rusty bumpers and lots of old clunkers, the magic is in the power of restoration that happens onsite in two unassuming metal garages.
“The first building is used for mechanical work, and when that is squared away, we move the cars to the second building to do the metal and body work,” says Tommy Arney, who is the owner of Moyock Muscle.
Like the cars themselves, at least one of the metal buildings existed way before Moyock Muscle took over the restoration business from a previous owner who opened shop 11 years ago. The building has been a pharmacy, home to William’s Trailers, and then Brady’s Outdoor Equipment.
“The versatility of our buildings is remarkable,” said Michelle Wickum, director of marketing for SteelMaster Buildings, which is located in Virginia Beach, VA and is the company that sold the buildings to the original owners. “Our customers do the most incredible things with our buildings by utilizing the clear-span space to create custom designs and applications to fit their specific needs.”
Steel buildings, metal buildings, and prefabricated buildings are designed for a broad range of residential and commercial applications including garages, workshops, carports, agricultural storage, metal barns, quonsets, airplane hangars, RV storage, roofing systems, metal garage storage buildings, military buildings, government buildings, commercial warehousing, metal sheds, and industrial storage.
The Moyock Muscle buildings have a Galvalume Plus Steel coating, which is virtually maintenance free and keeps the metal garages cool in the summer and easy to heat in the winter. The metal buildings are so versatile because they are constructed with 100 percent usable space; no beams or trusses mean that there is maximum space for maximum use. The steel buildings are also great for a DIY project, thanks to ease of construction—the buildings are accurately pre-cut and pre-drilled, using only one size nut and bolt.
“I love these buildings,” says Arney. “They are sturdy, and I know they won’t blow away in a wind storm. These are the only kind of buildings I would buy.”
