TCAB … A Year in Retrospect

 

It is hard to believe that just a little over one year ago, Tri-County Association for the Blind embarked on the journey to acquire and renovate a new facility, and to launch a capital campaign to raise the money needed to pay for that new building.  The time has passed at such exponential speed that we all feel invigorated, energized, excited!

In February of 2008, TCAB signed the deed on our new property at 1130 South 19th Street and chose to work with AUM architects to redesign the new space, and Lobar Management Construction Company to renovate it.  So began the process of monthly building committee meetings with Board members Helen Gemmill, Sarah Clark, Tim Grunstra and Patti Taleff along with the architect and construction supervisors.  The goal was to renovate an existing building in Harrisburg to realize the mission of TCAB, reflect the architectural vision of AUM, and to see at accomplished in a timely manner by Lobar Construction Management Company.

In April 2008, two months after reconstruction began, TCAB’s Capital Campaign Committee, led by Ralph Peters and Greg Gunn began the early phase of the capital campaign, many campaign meetings continued to be held to plan and implement the campaign, and to motivate a talented group of our volunteers to contact and encourage community leaders to financially support TCAB in the effort to raise $2.5 million for the new building.

Mixed into the plan was the unforeseen economic climate that has existed over the last several months—probably not the best time to launch a capital campaign!  Undaunted by economic circumstances, the capital campaign committee rolled up their sleeves and began the methodical process of working their plan to achieve success in the early phase of the capital campaign.
