The Hampden Rifle and Pistol Club in Maine is certainly no stranger to the benefits of steel. When they were looking to rebuild their shooting range, a durable metal Quonset hut was a fitting choice.

For over 60 years, they’ve used the same building as an indoor shooting range and clubhouse, but it started to show signs of wear and tear. It was getting too expensive for the club to maintain, so they had to start making changes.

They decided to rebuild a little stronger this time, so they went on a journey to learn more about the durable metal Quonset hut.

The president of the club, Jay Baack, already knew he wanted to go with a metal Quonset hut structure.

“The steel arch idea came about due to other customers who had used SteelMaster’s products and liked what they received,” says Baack. “We wanted to maximize floor space and the steel arch provided that over a stick-built building.”

That is one of the many benefits of owning a Quonset hut building. They are durable steel buildings, yet they also offer owners 100% usable space with a clear span design that eliminates beams and trusses.

The club hired someone to erect the buildings. The entire project took just three weeks to complete. They insulated the building with spray foam and that took another two weeks to complete.

After the arches were up, they gathered a large group of volunteer members who then helped to frame the rooms within the structure.
Not only did Baack and his crew enjoy the benefits of all of the added space, they also discovered another benefit of owning a Quonset hut structure—its ability to handle snow loads.

“We are happy with the snow-shedding ability of the design as well as how it is holding up to date,” says Baack.
